Our History

Long Before 1883

The legacy of supporting older Jewish adults in Greater Cincinnati began in 1883 and continues today thanks to the Foundation for Cincinnati Jewish Seniors.

But the commandment to “Honor Thy Father and Mother” is a core Jewish value dating back to the formation of the Jewish nation at Mt Sinai.

Long before the Foundation for Cincinnati Jewish Seniors was established, our community was dedicated to honoring seniors and supported two Jewish nursing homes. Glen Manor: the Home for the Jewish Aged, was established by the Reform Jewish community in 1883, and the Orthodox Jewish Home was founded in 1906 to serve Orthodox seniors.Eventually, the two existing Jewish nursing homes merged to create a new entity that would oversee the mission and vision of both nursing homes jointly. It was called Jewish Home of Cincinnati, Inc., and they began to draw up plans to build and operate a new living community which would meet the needs for all Jewish seniors in the region and would adhere to practices of both the reform and orthodox communities. The Orthodox Jewish Home purchased 80 acres in Mason, Ohio for this future facility and after a multi-year fundraising campaign led by the community’s philanthropic trail blazers, on March 16, 1997, 185 residents from both Glen Manor and the Orthodox Jewish Home moved into their new home in Mason which was named Cedar Village.

The Friends of Cedar Village was established in 1997 as the auxiliary of Cedar Village. This group of caring volunteers was dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for all Cedar Village residents.

Due to changes in demographics, federal and state funding models for the elderly, and the trending preference for aging in place, Cedar Village was sold in 2018 and as of 2026 is now known as Majestic Care at Cedar Village. The Jewish Home of Cincinnati no longer owns or manages Cedar Village and therefore in 2025, JHC changed its name to better reflect its new purpose and is now called Foundation for Cincinnati Jewish Seniors (FCJS). The organization remains committed to serve and impact Cincinnati area Jewish seniors wherever they reside.
